THE NEW OLD TOWN
The Las Vegas strip has eclipsed incorporated Las Vegas but the real Las Vegas is a New Old Town. Most people outside of Las Vegas presume the Las Vegas strip is the City of Las Vegas. “Au contraire”, the City of Las Vegas is further north on Las Vegas Blvd, the strip’s main drag.
Modern architecture has legs in the City. Oscar Goodman, Las Vegas’ former mayor, identified 63 acres in the middle of the City as “the jewel of the desert”. A performing arts center is within months of opening in Symphony Park, the center piece of Mayor Goodman’s sparkling vision.
A new consolidated Metropolitan Police Department; a new city hall nearing completion, and recently completed or renovated office buildings dot New Old Town Las Vegas.
A walk in the City of Las Vegas reveals a growing cosmopolitan young/old mixture of architectural design and new resident migration. New businesses have risen and old businesses are relocating to downtown Las Vegas.
The World Market Center is a state of the art exhibition center.
The Cleveland, Ruvo Brain Center is a Gehry designed neurological research center that is studying the scourge of old age (Alzheimer’s). Las Vegas may prove to be a leading center for neurological research and health.
Zappos is moving from Henderson to Las Vegas with a young army of employees that are touring the City in groups with plans to become a part of the City.
The CEO, Tony Hsieh, has already purchased a Las Vegas condominium. Tony Hsieh and some of his friends purchased the “First Friday” event earlier this year. “First Friday” seems destined to become bigger and better.
LaPour Partners, in 2005, renovated the Holsum Bread bakery to create an eatery, art, and office complex, near “First Friday”.
The Golden Nugget has led the way in downtown re-invention but The Plaza, Eldorado, and now the oldest casino/hotel in new/old Las Vegas, the Golden Gate is re-investing in the City.
